S.C. TATUM & CO cast iron rabbeting plane
Identical to the patent drawings for the 9/11/83 patent by John Bennett of Green Island, NY, and marked with patent date at base of tote. Bennett, along with several other men who assisted in the design of this plane, all worked for the S. C. Tatum Co. Cincinnati, Ohio. See PTAMPA I, page 143. These planes are rarely seen and were made in different widths, this one is 3/4” wide. The patent feature was a depth stop that slides up and down in a slot through the body and locked with nickel plated knurled thumbscrew. 9-1/4” long cast iron body with 40% japanning. Unfortunately has a casting flaw in sole about 2” behind the throat and a few more casting flaws in the flat side of plane body, and a crack in sole about 4” behind throat. Still in nice shape for a very uncommon plane.
